There are only a few years, Kim Gibilisco, choreographer, dancer and Polestar and Stott Pilates instructor training, the teaching Pilates private sessions in his studio in Manhattan. Today is an assistant professor of dance at Shenandoah University, Winchester, Virginia, and women to achieve a certification program Pilates for the school in the carpet. Here's how it came to the Coordinating League Pilates Pilates program and the university.
PP: How did the idea of a collegiate program of Pilates happen, and what it takes to convince the school officials?
KG: When I accepted my position in the dance department at SU, my President, Erica Helm, and I discussed the possibility of offering teacher training courses for our students Mat. I designed the curriculum in the summer of 2005 when asked Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) for approval as a member of education. Applying AGP is an important process, because wanted to make sure that our program has been approved. I also wanted to ensure that our graduates can apply for membership and the least developed countries be allowed in the aircraft programs in the future if they follow more. The rug program has been approved and started to run the program in fall 2005. The program was approved at the beginning of our university.
PP: How to design the program and what are the requirements?
KG: I've designed curriculum for special populations of students (19-25 years) may not have had any experience with the method. One semester of college-level anatomy is required to register. Because our students are in one of four years (compared with typical weekend seminars based), wanted use the time available, I had to teach the subject. I decided that two semesters sequence was the most effective teaching material for this population. Students must complete at least 84% in the first six months in advance to the second half.
The first semester includes Mat 2 hours and 1 hour experience class per week. In the second semester, students take Matt with me once a week. Then the students turn the education of all Group A weekly mat classes. After A student Mat class participants gave their views on the effectiveness and the instructor's teaching style for students. In the second semester, the lectures focus on teaching methods and class design. Using his knowledge of the trilogy, the 6 principles of Pilates (control, centering, concentration, movement fluid, precision and breathing) and 5 Laboratory Pilates principles (use of inspiration and expiration, the pelvic floor, restaurant features, visual appearance and neutral spine) students design a class with a theme or concept they want to address. Written and holidays practices and also end are administered.
By using certain models of teacher education Mat I researched, I have designed the curriculum of lectures and courses I think it is important to become very thorough teaching method. For example, our students are tested in physics courses in which they must demonstrate their domain of the 34 exercises and training courses in which they demonstrate their ability to teach safely and efficiently. I also wanted to provide students with work of course on the various accessories used in the work of soil (eg, magic circle, foam roller and Thera-bands and Thera-ball), so no need to take education courses outside the academy to develop their breadth of knowledge. Moreover, I show the con-signs of diabetes, orthopedic problems and pregnancy, so that our graduates are comfortable with teaching a variety of populations. What is stress more the importance of "knowing what you do not know and teach what you know. "For example, if a customer asks a question orthopedic is out of scope of practice, they know to refer them to a professional health. Our students learn to evaluate themselves and how to get more information if you are not clear.
PP: If you are the only instructor involved with the Pilates program?
KG: Yes, for the least developed countries, all teachers must have at least 5 years of teaching experience to educate teacher trainers.
DB: What kind of students that the program attract?
KG: Until 2007, we had the most dance couples enrolled in the program. However, this academic year our major in Music Theater and staff also have entered and successfully completed the program. For the 2008-2009 school year, you have big in dance, musical theater major, UB and former community members registered.
PP: Students who complete all requirements considered certified Pilates instructor?
KG: Only the least developed countries can "certify" teachers in the method. As a member of the PMA for education, teacher trainers will receive a certificate of completion with the SU and AGP logos above.
PP: Pilates is a real important, and if not, how it works in terms of exclusion of a student?
KG: Our Teacher Training program is an option for courses that can satisfy the requirement of choice of dance.
PP: How many students have attended the program and are actively teaching now?
KG: We had 26 students complete teacher training off the mat in which 14 students are actively Pilates Mat.
